A Little Help for the Ones Who Help Everyone Else
Caring for someone you love can bring rewarding moments—and challenging ones.
These simple reminders can help make everyday caregiving a little easier.
-
Keep medications, doctors’ names and numbers, insurance information, allergies, emergency contacts, and important documents in one easy-to-find place.
-
Caregiving comes with a lot to remember. Keep a notebook or simple calendar for appointments, medication changes, questions for the doctor, and things you notice about your loved one.
-
Before an appointment, write down your top questions. Bring an updated medication list and take notes during the visit. Don't be afraid to ask the doctor to explain something again.
-
Look for loose rugs, poor lighting, cluttered walkways, slippery bathroom floors, and other fall hazards. Small changes can make a big difference.
-
Regular times for meals, medications, bathing, activities, and bedtime can make the day easier for both you and your loved one.
-
When someone asks, “What can I do?” give them something specific. Ask them to pick up groceries, sit with your loved one, prepare a meal, make a phone call, or handle an errand.
-
Changes in appetite, sleep, balance, memory, mood, bathroom habits, or energy may be worth discussing with your loved one's healthcare provider.
-
Eat. Rest. Get outside. Go to your own appointments. Talk to someone. Take a break when you can.
You matter in the caregiving journey, too.
