When the House Was Full of Laughter

Some houses seem to hold memories in their walls.

Miss Ruby thought about that one afternoon while looking through an old family photo album. There were pictures of birthday dinners, Sunday gatherings, holiday celebrations, and ordinary afternoons when everyone happened to stop by at the same time.

She could almost hear the sounds again.

Children running from room to room. Pots rattling in the kitchen. Someone laughing too loudly. Two people talking at once. A television playing in the background while somebody insisted they were not asleep—they were only “resting their eyes.”

The house was rarely quiet in those days.

Sometimes Miss Ruby missed that joyful noise. The family had grown and scattered. Some lived in other cities, some were busy raising families of their own, and a few beloved faces now lived only in her memories.

But as she turned the pages, she realized something: the love that filled those rooms had not disappeared. It had helped shape every person who passed through them.

A full house is a blessing, but so is a full heart.

Life changes. Children grow up. Friends move away. Traditions take new forms. We may grieve what is no longer the same, but we can also be grateful that we experienced it.

And we can create new moments of connection.

Miss Ruby picked up the telephone and called her granddaughter.

“I was looking at some old pictures,” she said. “You ought to come by and see them.”

Her granddaughter laughed. “I’ll come Sunday—and I’m bringing the children.”

Miss Ruby smiled as she closed the album. It sounded as if the house might soon be full of laughter again.

This week, reach out to someone who once filled your home or heart with joy. Share a memory, send a photograph, or invite them to spend a little time with you.

New memories often begin with a simple invitation.

A Moment to Reflect

What sounds do you remember from a house filled with family and friends?

Who could you invite to call, visit, or share a memory with you this week?
