You’re Still in the Game!
There’s something about football season that brings people together. Somebody has on their lucky shirt. Somebody is explaining what the coach should have done. And somebody is hollering at the television as though the referee can hear them.
Whether you follow every game or just show up for the snacks, you know this much: everybody wants to feel part of the team.
That feeling doesn’t disappear as we get older.
Sometimes, though, life changes can leave us wondering where we fit. Retirement comes. Children grow up. Our bodies ask us to slow down. Responsibilities that once filled our days belong to someone else now.
We may quietly wonder, “Am I still needed?”
Yes, you are.
Your role may look different today, but there are still people who need what you bring. A grandchild may need your patient ear. A neighbor may need a phone call. Someone at church may need the encouragement only you would think to give.
Think about the people who helped you along the way. Some taught you a skill. Others prayed for you, told you the truth, or made you feel welcome when you were unsure of yourself. They may never have realized how much their kindness mattered.
You can be that person for someone else.
Psalm 92:14 reminds us that we can still bear fruit in old age. What a beautiful picture: a life that continues to offer something good, even as the seasons change.
That fruit might be wisdom, kindness, creativity, or faith. It might be a meal shared, a story told, or a simple “I was thinking about you.”
And on the days when your energy is low, receiving care is part of belonging, too. You don’t have to earn your place by always doing something for somebody.
This week, consider one small way to connect. Send the message. Make the call. Invite someone to watch the game. Share a memory that might make another person smile.
You don’t have to run down a football field to make a difference.
There is still room for you—and plenty of life left to live.
A Moment to Reflect: What is one gift, experience, or kindness you could share with someone this week?
